10 things to check before buying a used SUV
A simple checklist to help you spot problems before you pay for a second-hand SUV.
A used SUV can be great value, but a few minutes of checking can save you a lot of money. Take this list with you.
Paperwork
- Registration certificate (RC): the name, engine number and chassis number should match the car.
- Insurance: check it is valid and ask whether any claims were made.
- Service history: regular servicing at the right intervals is a good sign.
- Loan clearance: if the car was bought on a loan, ask for the bank’s NOC.
On the car
- Panel gaps and paint: uneven gaps or mismatched paint can mean an accident repair.
- Tyres: uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension problems.
- Underbody: look for rust, oil leaks or damage, especially on 4x4s used off-road.
- Cold start: start the engine cold and listen for knocks or heavy smoke.
Test drive
- Gearbox and clutch: shifts should be smooth with no slipping or grinding.
- Brakes and steering: the car should stop straight and the steering should not pull to one side.
When in doubt, pay a trusted mechanic to inspect the car. It costs little compared to a costly surprise later.
